Tennis is a sport played between two players, either singles or two teams of two players each, more commonly known as doubles. The game of tennis as we know it today originated in England in the 19th century, being more commonly known as “lawn tennis.” It is approximated that the first match was played sometime between 1859 and 1865. It was included in the first Olympic Games in 1896 and continued to be played until 1924. After that, tennis was not played competitively again at an Olympic Games until 1988. Dominican Republic made its Olympic tennis debut with female tennis player Joelle Schad in Atlanta 1996, and in men’s tennis in Rio 2016 with Victor Estrella, who is the only Dominican winner of an ATP tournament (Quito 2015, 2016, 2017). The team currently has players such as Roberto Cid, Nick Hardt, Peter Bertran and Jose Olivares who are rising in the ATP world ranking and are fundamental pieces of the Dominican Davis Cup team.
