Athletics participation is graded as historic

The president of the Dominican Federations of Athletics Associations, Gerardo Suero Correa, graded as “superb” the performance given by the athletics delegtion in the Central American Caribbean Championship in Morelia, Mexico, where the Dominicans attained 11 medals, including three medals.

He thanked the support provided by the Sports Ministry, CRESO, and the Dominican Olympic Committee (COD), by highlighting the results.

“We surpassed the performance given in 2012; we also lead the two relays in the 4×100, and 4×400 (male and female categories), in the Senior World Championship in Russia next month.

The female relay team will be composed by Fanny Chalas, marielys Sánchez, Marleny Mejía and Margarita Manzueta. Relay runner for female category will be Lavonne Idlette. For the male team, the relay runner will be Joel Soriano.

The Dominican Republic won three silver and 11 bronze medals in the disputed Championship, held from the 5th-7th, which was won by the Mexican delegation.

The silver medals were won by Marielys Sánchez in the 100meter dash, Eddy Florián, won the long jump, María Mancebo won the 3,000 meters with obstacles category.

Bronze winners were Milagros Montes de Oca, Jorge Montes (high jump), Gustavo Cuesta (400mts flat); José Alberto Beras (1.500); Lavonne Idlette ( 100mts jump); Mariely Sánchez (200mts); Alvaro Abreu (3,000 mts with obstacles); and the Dominican Republic in the 4×400 relay (Arismendy Peguero, Gustavo Cuesta, Félix Sánchez and Luguelín Santos).

Marielys Sánchez classified also in the 100meters for the World Athletics Games, to be held in Russia from August 10th-18th.
